Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we reflect on a fundamental topic in our spiritual life: Holiness. Our base text, Hebrews 12:14, reminds us of the importance of pursuing peace with all and seeking sanctification, without which no one will see the Lord. Let us then delve deeper into this call to sanctification.

Holiness: A Divine Characteristic

We begin by recognizing that holiness is one of the fundamental characteristics of God. God is a Holy God and as such everything that has to do with Him is Holy: His throne, His Kingdom, His Heavenly Army, His Word and, consequently, His Church. When we speak of the holiness of God, we refer to his absolute purity and perfection in Him and in everything that has been created by Him and for Him. He is the only one who is truly holy in Himself. However, as his sons and daughters, we, his Church, are called to reflect his holiness in our lives in the world in which we live. Hence “You are the light of the world.”

Holiness: Separation and Dedication

In the Old Testament, the concept of holiness for the Hebrews involved both separation and dedication. This means that, as a people set apart for God, we are called to separate ourselves from the world and its corrupting influences. This involves living according to divine standards, away from the immorality and godlessness that characterize the world.

The Power of Holiness

Sanctification, in the Christian context, involves more than simply avoiding sin. It is a process of interior transformation that enables us to live holy lives consecrated to God. As believers, we have been gifted with the power of the Holy Spirit, which enables us to resist temptation and live in obedience to the will of God.

Witnesses of Holiness

Our sanctification not only impacts our relationship with God, but also our testimony to the world. As we live holy, set apart lives for God, we become living witnesses of his transforming power. Our very lives become a testimony to the reality of the gospel and the power of God to save and transform lives.

Conclusion: A Call to Holiness

In conclusion, holiness is not optional for the Christian, but rather a divine mandate. We are called to separate ourselves from the world and dedicate ourselves completely to God, allowing his Holy Spirit to transform us into his image and likeness. May this message inspire us to pursue sanctification in all areas of our lives, so that we may reflect the glory of God and bear lasting fruit.

May the Lord grant us the grace and strength to live holy lives consecrated to him. Amen.
