The Church of the Lord Jesus Christ should have a clear purpose: to seek revival in our lives and in our church, clearly inspired by the events described in the book of Acts, an inspiring and dynamic account that recounts the supernatural events and transformative experiences that marked the beginning of the early church. It is a book that shows the power of the Holy Spirit at work in the lives of believers, enabling them to boldly proclaim the gospel and perform miracles that shocked crowds. In addition to being a historical record, it is a vibrant testimony to the continuing work of Jesus Christ through his body, the church, and a call to follow his example of love, power, and mission in the world. The biblical text in the book of Acts shows us the boldness and miracles that occurred under the hand of the apostles, revealing the transforming power of God in action.
In a very particular way, we are going to talk about the events in chapters 3 and 4 of Acts that inspire us to seek revival in our spiritual lives and in our church. May we be filled with the Holy Spirit, may we trust in the power of the name of Jesus and may we boldly proclaim the gospel, bringing the light and love of Christ to a world that needs it so much.
Of course, nothing that happened in these chapters was by chance or coincidence, there was prior preparation and commitment, preparation and commitment that the church of our day has forgotten. The disciples prepared for the events described in Acts 3 and 4 through several aspects:
Prayer and Communion: After Jesus\’ ascension, the disciples engaged in prayer and communion in the upper room, as described in Acts 1:14. They were united in prayer, waiting for the promise of the Holy Spirit that Jesus had announced to them.
Hope in the Promise: Before his ascension, Jesus told the disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). This promise gave them hope and expectation as to the power and authority they would receive to testify of him.
Faith in the Name of Jesus: Peter and John, in particular, demonstrated bold faith in the name of Jesus. This faith not only developed during her time with Jesus, but was also strengthened after his resurrection and with the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
They firmly believed in the power of the name of Jesus to heal and transform lives.
Scripture Study: The disciples were rooted in the Old Testament Scriptures, allowing them to understand and apply the prophecies and teachings related to Jesus and the kingdom of God. This gave them a solid foundation for their faith and their ministry.
Fraternal Communion: The disciples supported and strengthened each other in community. After Jesus\’ resurrection, they met regularly to share teachings, pray, and break bread together (Acts 2:42). This communion strengthened their unity and their shared testimony.
As I said, none of this happened by chance or coincidence, the disciples prepared for the events of Acts 3 and 4 through prayer, hope in the promise of Jesus, faith in his name, study of the Scriptures and fraternal communion. These practices equipped them spiritually to meet the challenges and opportunities that arose in ministry after Jesus\’ ascension.
The Meeting at the Beautiful Gate (Acts 3:1-10):
In this passage, Peter and John find a man lame since birth begging at the temple gate. Instead of simply walking by, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit (Note he does not say “filled with carnality and entertainment”), stares at the man and says, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, arise and walk.” And the man is healed instantly! This miracle not only restores the man\’s physical ability, but also awakens the faith and admiration of those present.
Peter\’s Bold Preaching (Acts 4:1-22):
After the miracle, Peter and John are arrested and brought before the council. Despite the threat and persecution, Pedro does not back down. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he boldly proclaims the name of Jesus and the truth of the gospel before the religious authorities. Peter declares that the healing of the lame man has been accomplished in the name of Jesus, the Savior whom they crucified but whom God raised from the dead. Despite opposition, Peter and John remain steadfast in their testimony.
Based on these passages, we can extract several key points for our revival sermon:
The importance of the power of the name of Jesus: Just as Peter and John healed the lame man in the name of Jesus, we must remember that our power and authority come from Him. In the midst of challenges and trials, we can call on the name of Jesus with faith and see its transformative power in action.
The role of the Holy Spirit: Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit when he performed the miracle and when he faced opposition. Likewise, we need to depend on the Holy Spirit for courage, wisdom, and power in our Christian lives and ministry.
Courage in Preaching the Gospel: Despite opposition and persecution, Peter and John did not back down from their testimony of Christ. Like them, we need courage to proclaim the gospel in a world that is often hostile to our faith.
In conclusion, the events in Acts chapters 3 and 4 inspire us to seek revival in our spiritual lives and in our church. May we be filled with the Holy Spirit, may we trust in the power of the name of Jesus and may we boldly proclaim the gospel, bringing the light and love of Christ to a world that needs it so much.
May this sermon motivate us to fervently seek revival in our lives and in our community of faith. May the transforming power of God be manifested in our midst, bringing healing, salvation and spiritual renewal! In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
