Today\’s world is divided for a variety of reasons, including ideological, political, religious, cultural, economic and social differences. These divisions are the result of lack of understanding, lack of tolerance, personal or group interests, competition for limited resources, among other factors.
Ideological and political differences are often divisive, as people have different views on how societies and political and religious systems should function. Religious differences also divide communities, as each religion has its own beliefs and practices.
Additionally, economic and social divisions can arise due to income inequality, unequal access to resources and opportunities, discrimination, and other factors that create gaps between groups of people.
The lack of constructive dialogue, media polarization, the spread of misinformation and the rise of nationalism and tribalism also contribute to the division in the world today which, truth be told, is the result of a number of complex and multifaceted factors that They reflect the different perspectives, interests and realities of people and communities around the world.
However, the fact that the world is divided for all these reasons and more has absolutely nothing to do with the Church of the Lord Jesus. This is why one of the main themes that today\’s church must listen to and focus on developing in its Christian life is the call that the Spirit of God makes to us to unity and love. Jesus emphasized the importance of love among believers in John 13:34-35, saying, \”A new commandment I give to you: That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this you will know \”All of you who are my disciples, if you had love for one another.\”
Ephesians 4:3:
\”Do everything possible to maintain the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.\”
Colossians 3:14
\”Above all, clothe yourselves in love, which is the perfect bond.\”
Unity and love among brothers and in the Lord\’s Church are fundamental to the witness and effectiveness of the church in the world. Without unity and love the church is ineffective and is nothing more than a pale reflection of what the Lord Jesus desires for it. Without Unity and Love the church cannot proclaim themes such as justice, compassion, holiness, and service to others, all of which are emphasized in Scripture as central aspects of the Christian life.
1 Corinthians 1:10
\”I beg you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all live in harmony and that there be no divisions among you, but that you remain united in the same mind and in the same purpose.\”
Romans 12:16
\”Live in harmony with each other. Do not be arrogant, but show solidarity with the humble. Do not believe that you are the only one who knows.\”
Psalm 133:1
\”How good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in harmony!\”
Unity and love are themes of greater importance because they are fundamental to the identity and witness of the church. Jesus taught that love between believers would be the distinguishing mark of his discipleship. Unity and love reflect the very nature of God, who is love (1 John 4:8) and who calls us to love one another as he has loved us.
Unfortunately, in the church today, we often witness divisions, conflicts, and lack of love among brothers. This lack of unity and love undermines the witness of the church and hinders its ability to fulfill its calling to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. Therefore, it is crucial that the church rediscover and practice the unity and love that Jesus taught, so that it can be effective in its mission of bringing the gospel to the world and making disciples of all nations.
The church can rediscover unity and love in several ways:
Cultivating communion:
Encouraging participation in community activities such as prayer, Bible study, worship, and fellowship can strengthen bonds among church members.
Practicing forgiveness:
Recognizing and addressing conflict biblically, practicing forgiveness and reconciliation when necessary, can restore fractured relationships and promote unity.
Teaching the Word of God:
Strong, Bible-centered teaching on love, unity, and the importance of living in harmony with others can inspire believers to seek unity in Christ.
Modeling the love of Christ:
Church leaders and members can be living examples of Christ\’s love by selflessly serving, encouraging, and supporting others.
Cultivating a spirit of humility:
Recognizing our own need for grace and recognizing the dignity and worth of others can counteract pride and division in the church.
Seeking unity in diversity:
Recognizing and valuing the diversity of gifts, talents, backgrounds, and opinions within the church, while focusing on what unites believers rather than what divides them, can promote greater unity.
By taking practical and biblical steps to cultivate unity and love, the church can rediscover and fully live out Christ\’s call to be a community of love and unity in a divided world.
