In the world, witchcraft is a demonic spiritual practice that involves the use of occult skills and knowledge to manipulate supernatural forces in order to achieve various purposes, such as gaining power, influence, knowledge, or control over events or people. Traditionally, witchcraft has been associated with the performance of spells, incantations, rituals and ceremonies that may involve the use of symbolic objects, words or gestures.
Witchcraft can manifest itself in various ways, depending on the culture and beliefs of the people in the community or country in which it is practiced. In some traditions, sorcerers or witches are considered “people who possess special abilities to communicate with demonic spirits, perform healings, speak with the dead and predict the future or influence events through magic.”
Jesus did not specifically mention witchcraft in his recorded teachings in the Gospels, but he addressed topics related to idolatry, false religion, and demonic spiritual practices that go against the kingdom of God. For example, in Mark 7:21-23, Jesus talks about evil actions that come from the human heart, including idolatry and witchcraft, although he does not mention these terms specifically:
\”From within, from the hearts of men, come evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, envy, slander, pride, \”Foolishness. All these evils come out from within and defile a man.\”
Although Jesus did not speak directly about witchcraft, his general teaching condemned any practice that diverted people from God or led them to seek supernatural powers outside of God\’s will. Additionally, Jesus taught about the importance of loving God with all your heart and avoiding any form of idolatry or worship of false gods.
Biblically speaking, witchcraft is a heretical or demonic practice and part of pagan or neo-pagan practices. The entry of witchcraft into the church of Jesus is a worrying phenomenon that has occurred throughout history and continues to be a challenge in some religious contexts. In many countries around the world, Catholic theology has been mixed with demonic practices clearly related to all types of witchcraft.
Let me share some ways in which witchcraft has infiltrated the church over the centuries:
Religious syncretism:
In some cases, witchcraft beliefs and practices merge with Christian theology in a syncretistic manner. This can occur when people adopt elements of witchcraft, such as spirit-summoning rituals or divination practices, and combine them with the Christian faith, believing that they can coexist or complement each other.
Superstitious practices:
Some people within the church may resort to superstitious practices that have their roots in witchcraft, such as using amulets, talismans, or protective rituals to counteract evil or attract good luck. These practices, although they may seem harmless, can divert the Christian faith toward trusting in objects or rituals instead of trusting in God.
Spiritual manipulation:
In certain Christian circles, leaders or groups may resort to spiritual manipulation techniques that resemble witchcraft practices. This may include the use of mind control techniques, emotional manipulation, or the promise of supernatural powers to influence the lives of believers, which is contrary to the biblical principles of freedom and trust in God.
Misinterpretation of Scripture:
In some cases, people within the church may misinterpret the Bible to support witchcraft-related practices. This may include seeking secret revelations or hidden knowledge through unbiblical methods, rather than relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and diligent study of the Scriptures.
It is important for church leaders and members to be alert and have a spirit of discernment to recognize and address any witchcraft influences that may infiltrate the faith community. This may involve sound teaching of Christian doctrine, promoting prayer and reliance on the Holy Spirit, and providing an environment of community and support where believers can grow in their faith and resist any negative influences.
Exodus 22:18
This passage directly establishes the prohibition of allowing witches to live, reflecting the seriousness of the practice of witchcraft in the biblical perspective.
Deuteronomy 18:10-12
This passage lists a number of practices related to witchcraft, including divination, magic, and consulting the dead, all considered abominable before God. Furthermore, he highlights how these practices were reason enough for God to expel entire nations from the presence of his people.
Galatians 5:19-21
In this text, witchcraft is mentioned as one of the works of the flesh, along with other serious sins such as adultery and idolatry. This highlights the seriousness and sinful nature of witchcraft in the context of the Christian life.
Witchcraft practices in some Latin American countries:
Mexico: With a rich history of indigenous beliefs and traditions, as well as the influence of Catholic culture, Mexico is known for its varied witchcraft and curanderismo practices.
Brazil: Brazilian culture is a mix of indigenous, African and European influences, which has given rise to various forms of spirituality and magical practices, such as candomblé, umbanda and quimbanda.
Cuba: Santeria, a syncretic religion that combines elements of African Yoruba beliefs with Catholicism, is widely practiced in Cuba and has a strong presence in the daily life and spirituality of the Cuban people.
Haiti: With a deep voodoo tradition, fusing elements of African beliefs with Catholicism, voodoo is an integral part of Haitian culture and is practiced by a significant portion of the population.
Biblically speaking, witchcraft is presented as a deeply heretical and demonic practice, rooted in pagan and neo-pagan belief systems that are in direct opposition to the will and designs of God. Since ancient times, witchcraft has been seen as a form of spiritual manipulation that seeks to gain power and control through forbidden and dark means.
In addition to all of this, witchcraft can be related to a variety of spiritual practices and beliefs, some of which include:
Astrology:
Although astrology and witchcraft are distinct practices, they are often linked due to their focus on the influence of celestial bodies on people\’s lives. Astrology is based on the study of the position and movement of the planets and stars to determine personality characteristics, future events, and compatibility between individuals.
Fortune telling:
Witchcraft often involves divination practices, which are methods used to predict the future or reveal hidden information. This may include the use of tarot, divination cards, palm reading, dream interpretation, among other methods.
Spiritism:
Some forms of witchcraft may incorporate beliefs or practices related to communication with spirits or entities from the afterlife. This may include invoking spirits, performing rituals to contact the dead, or channeling spiritual energies.
Quackery:
In some cultures, witchcraft may be closely related to curanderismo, which involves the use of medicinal herbs, rituals, and spiritual practices to treat physical, emotional, or spiritual illnesses.
Ritual Magic:
Witchcraft often involves the use of magical rituals, spells, and incantations to influence events or people. These rituals may include manipulating natural energies, invoking deities, or performing specific ceremonies to achieve a desired goal.
The Bible addresses witchcraft with a clear and forceful condemnation, showing that these practices are an abomination in the eyes of God. It is presented as a transgression of divine will and a direct affront to his sovereignty. In many passages, we warn about the dangers and consequences of engaging in witchcraft activities, pointing out that those who practice them are in disobedience to God and subject to his judgment.
The Old Testament contains several commandments and prohibitions specifically directed against witchcraft and its manifestations. For example, in Exodus 22:18 it is stated: \”You will not allow the sorceress to live\”, which shows the seriousness of this practice in the divine perspective. Similarly, Deuteronomy 18:10-12 lists various forms of witchcraft and divination, warning that they are abominations before God and that those who practice them are subject to His rejection and judgment.
In the New Testament, the apostle Paul also condemns witchcraft as a work of the flesh that is opposed to the path of faith and righteousness. In Galatians 5:19-21, witchcraft is mentioned along with other sinful practices, evidencing its incompatibility with Christian life and its total rejection by God.
Therefore, witchcraft is presented in the Bible as a practice deeply contrary to the will of God and that carries with it serious spiritual and moral consequences. The biblical condemnation of witchcraft reflects the importance of standing firm in faith and divine principles, avoiding any form of participation in activities that undermine the sovereignty and authority of God.
Witchcraft and its practices are treated in the Bible with a clear and forceful condemnation. Witchcraft is considered a spiritual practice that involves the invocation of supernatural forces and the manipulation of occult energies to achieve certain purposes. It is known that demons can influence people through witchcraft in several ways:
Deception and false promises:
Demons can tempt people by offering them power, knowledge, or success through witchcraft. They promise to satisfy personal desires or solve problems, but in reality, they lead the person down a path of deception and spiritual slavery.
Mental control:
Through rituals and witchcraft practices, demons can exert mental control over people, manipulating their thoughts, emotions, and actions. This can lead to the person\’s emotional and spiritual dependence on evil forces.
Will manipulation:
Demons can influence the will of people who practice witchcraft, making them act according to their desires and wills. This can lead the person to make destructive and harmful decisions for themselves and others.
Spiritual oppression:
Participation in witchcraft practices can open spiritual doors for demonic oppression in a person\’s life. Demons can take advantage of this spiritual vulnerability to cause confusion, fear, depression, and other emotional and spiritual problems.
In short, demons manipulate people through witchcraft by tempting them with false promises, controlling their minds and wills, and spiritually oppressing their lives. It is important for people to remain firm in their faith and avoid any form of occult practice to protect themselves from demonic influence.
The Scriptures warn us of the dangers inherent in witchcraft, but they also prohibit its practice as something abominable before God. It is important for believers to understand and obey these biblical teachings to remain faithful to God\’s will.
